Los Cabos, Mexico…….. After a six-month, round-the-clock operation and 136 truckloads of sod, West Coast Turf has installed 60 acres of its latest bermudagrass cultivar for a new championship golf course
in Baja California. Designed by Fazio Golf Course Designers, the private world-class golf course, called Querencia, is slated to open in early November.
Introduced by West Coast Turf in 1999, Bull’s-Eye Bermuda was the sod of choice for both the fairways and roughs at Querencia. The unusual choice to use one grass wall-to-wall was for practical purposes, according to Jim Key, CGCS, director of golf course operations.
"With just one grass on the fairways and roughs, you have the opportunity to change the layout simply by mowing different patterns and heights to make the course more difficult or easy. This design has given us a lot of flexibility," he said. "Bull’s-Eye is taking to short mowing, 3/8" for the fairways, and it shines as a rough grass at 1-3/4". It’s giving us the contrast between the fairway lines we need, plus, because of its dense growth habit, the ball is going to sit up on the blades for good club-to-ball contact. And the color is phenomenal, it’s so dark green." Bull’s-Eye is also prized for its resistance to scalping, no seed heads and better shade tolerance than other bermudas.
To accomplish the large installation, West Coast Turf harvested, shipped and laid 1-1/2 acres, or 500 rolls, of Bull’s-Eye sod per day. The sod was harvested and cut into wide strips to create “big rolls” for fast installation at the site, and it was washed of all soil for light transport and quick establishment, as well as to meet the stringent requirements of Mexico’s department of agriculture.
"West Coast Turf has done a great job," said Key. "To grow 60 acres of sod and ship it to Mexico—a four-day, 1,200-mile trip one way—was amazing."
"We were privileged to do this job and are very pleased with the results," said Jeff Cole, vice president of sales for West Coast Turf. "This is a gorgeous course set in the Sonoran Desert but with sweeping ocean views from almost everywhere. Between the setting, the Fazio design and the turfgrass, I think Querencia is going to offer a memorable game of golf."
